2009 – New Marine Pollutant Marking, New Small Quantity
Exceptions, New Incident Reporting Requirements |
Dear Valued Customers:
The Department of Transportation has just issued its Final
Rule under HM-215J and HM-224D affecting international
harmonization. Included in this final rule are amendments
regarding the transportation of batteries and
battery-powered devices:
- New incident reporting
requirements
- Clarification of requirements
on whether a battery is non-spillable
- New requirements for the
transport of dry batteries
- New package marking
requirements
- Clarification of requirement on
transporting batteries in order to prevent
short-circuiting, dangerous evolution of heat, damage to
terminals, or for air, unintentional activation.

The final rule also
includes also adopts other changes aimed at international
harmonization:
- New Marine Pollutant Marking
- New Small Quantity Exceptions
- Changes to the 172.101 Table
- Amendments to the Organic
Peroxide Tables
- New Fuel Cell Requirements,
including new proper shipping names

| Voluntary compliance is
authorized immediately, with a delayed compliance date of
Jan. 1, 2010. You can view the Final Rule in its entirety
